KCA is a local charity with innovation at its heart

KCA have once again suffered a huge loss with the recent death of long-standing Board Member Bob Mortimer.

Dedicating much of his life to public service, Bob was a long-standing official with the Royal British Legion. Bob was a prominent official of the legion, having served as President of the Golcar branch and Chairman of the South & West Yorkshire area. He represented the legion at many events, including conferences, meetings and parades in memory of fallen servicemen and women.

From 1986 to 1990 Bob also served as a Liberal Democrat Councillor on Kirklees Council, and again from 1991 to 1995. It was during this time that Bob became involved with Kirklees Community Association.

Among his other interests, Bob was also a governor of his local school and was involved with organisations including Citizen’s Advice and the Ministry of Defence Veteran’s advice and Pensions Committee.

KCA are saddened to learn of the news that Board member and Vice Chair Hazel Wigmore passed away following a short illness. Hazel was instrumental in many aspects of our community, founding the National Children's Centre in 1975. She worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those around her and was a role model to so many. She will be greatly missed.

Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman, who had known her since 1978, was fulsome in his praise of Hazel. He said she was a formidable operator whose aura demanded an immediate respect.

He said: “She was a natural force for good. She was a national figure from an indomitable breed of women of her generation."
